On May 1, 1654, 'Old Goodman Willmot desired the Court, that his son may be freed from training which was considered, and with reference to his own age, his wife's weakness, and their living at a farm, his son was freed, only s to attend as other Farmers do.' The town of Hamden, population 51,960 covers 33.0 sq. miles and is located in southwest Connecticut on the northern border of New Haven. These lands were included in the purchase of 1638 from the Indians by the founders of New Haven. The town was originally settled in 1650 by Benjamin Wilmot, the first brickmaker in the colony. Early development was slow, owing to the delegation of most of these lands as large farms for the New Haven market. Mills were built in 1735, however, leading to the creation of the first parish in the town, the Mount Carmel Society, in 1757. The town was incorporated from New Haven in 1786. Today Hamden is a suburb of New Haven, separated from the larger town to the south by mountains and rock formations. Hamden principal industries are retail trade, computer products, manufacture of wire and cable, concrete, pump mixer products, fabricated metals, construction and business services. Research Notes: Benjamin “goodman’ Wilmot (Willmott, Willmot, Wilmott),
The name Wilmot is a derivative of Willmon which is an early variation of William the Conqueror's name. It comes from the Norman form of an old French/Germanic name Will/helm meaning Will or desire and helmet or protection. Other English spellings include Wilmoth, Willmett, Willimott, Willmin, Wilmin, Willimont. The Benjamin Wilmot named here, is often confused with his son Benjamin in the early records. Several sources believe the first three events refer to his son instead. He signed the "Fundamental Agreement" in 1639 in New Haven. Land was laid out to him in 1641. He was among 182 persons who took the Oath of Fidelity on July 1st, 1644. "Old Goodman Wilmot" took the "Freeman's Oath" on May 2, 1647/8. (F-58) When "Old Goodman Willmot" died on Aug. 18, 1669 he was about age "fourscore." (F-22,32) Family lore says that he's related to the Earl of Rochester. (F-449) There is an Edward Wilmoth on about the same age as this Benjamin who lived in Virginia at the time of his death in 1647. It is not known if these two men are related, but his will is included here, in case a connection is found at a later date. Families of Ancient New Haven by Donald Lines Jacobus, pg. 1981
Benjamin Wilmot signed the Fundamental Agreement 4 June 1639 in New Haven and swore fidelity in 1647. Between 1646 and 1649, he was fined for negligent behavior, such as not coming to watch on training day and defective arms. He was assigned to sit in the 9th row of the middle seats in the meeting house. On May 17, 1647, he asked for 24 acres of land which he received in 1662. His home was near West Rock
He married Ann (last name may be Ladd) and she died 7 Oct 1668 in New Haven. His will dated 7 Aug. 1669 says he was aged about four score and mentions son, William Wilmot, and the children of his three children.
His tombstone was not found along the wall of the Grove Street Cemetery, in the crypt under Center Church, or moved & buried in the Grove Street Cemetery
Benjamin Wilmot signed the fundamental agreement June 4th 1639 in New Haven, Connecticut
He swore fidelity in 1647
Benjamin Wilmot's last will and testament, dated August 7, 1669, mentions his four grandchildren from his daughter Ann as heirs of his small estate. Probably because both Ann and William Bunnell were already dead.
